Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul Turkey has beautiful old and new buildings. However sine 5000 BC it has been a place for constant tumult. Each new empire had a different capital. Like the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Palaces and Churches have been razed and rebuilt to honor the latest despot. So what constitutes the Turkish culture is up for grabs. Culturally it benefits from the tension between tradition and modernity. It's describes as "a lovely mess." One area the is beautifully designed however is the Nisantasi district. It's filled with chic boutiques and Art Nouveau architecture. Turkey is a hard culture to describe architecturally wise. It's influenced by the design in other countries and has yet to find it's own character.

Montreal

Montreal is usually thought to be the Paris of North America. However if you go to this city you will see it's anything but. The city is caught inbetween the Ottawa and Saint Lawrence rivers, the city has just under two million people. The city is about layers. It's tree finged streetscapes hve been electrified with spectacular modern additions. Above are just some of their new modern twists. The top left of the pic. is Buckminster Fuller's Biosphere for Expo 67. And to the bottom right is the Palais de Congres convention center. Montreal not only has cobblestone streets and modern buildings mixed with old ones that are beautifully decorated, but it also has tons of four star restaurants. What more can you ask for great food, and beautiful buildings.
